How is Television Bad, and How is it Good?
1. Advantages of Television Based on Education:
I believe that as consumers, the most important advantage of television is that it provides us with educational content. Along with D.I.Y projects, nature channels, or cooking shows, T.V constantly provides us with resourceful and educational opportunities. It's a huge way to keep us informed and up to date with current events, and gives us the knowledge we need in our everyday lives. Gathering and bonding, elevation of our mood, expansion of knowledge, and motivation also come from the exposure to education. When we consume the content we view on T.V, we become more aware of the things around us and open to new topics necessary for conversation. Based on the information we consume, we can also develop our own opinions and explore new topics. Educational content is at our fingertips with the advantage of T.V; we are often exposed to it without us realizing.
2. Disadvantages of Television Based on Reality Perception:
Sure T.V can be very beneficial for us as consumers, but it can also warp our perception of reality based on gender rolls, cognitive skills, and making wise decisions. Not only does this effect our cognitive state, but it can severely damage our mental health as well as ruin relationships. Once we become drawn into a T.V show, what we are watching can become a reality for us. Actors on T.V can either cause us to think that their actions are appropriate for the real world, which in most cases they aren’t. Reality warping can either cause us to think that we are incapable of achieving things that we are capable of, or that we’re capable of achieving things far out of our reach. It can also change the way we think based on topics such as sex, crime, and violence. What once concerned us is what we can easily become numb to, especially if we are constantly exposed to it. The scary thing is that our mindset can easily change, and the things we are exposing ourselves to on T.V could be the source of that.
3. Out of the two points that I picked from the above questions, I would agree that T.V has more disadvantages based on our perception of reality, than the advantages that it has on education. The reason why I think this is because we can easily receive education from online sources, school, or books, rather than from what we watch on T.V. We can easily learn a lot more just by connecting with the people around us or spending our time surrounded by nature instead of in front of a screen. Many of the things on T.V today aren’t worth our time and aren’t very reliable educational sources. The content we absorb can easily affect our thought patterns and consume our minds if we aren't careful. When we are exposed to certain content over long periods of time, our brain creates files to store that information. Certain things in the future may potentially cause those files to reappear, even when we don't necessarily want them to. If we aren't careful, the things we are often exposed to through the T.V can take over the way we think and live. Just because we watch a murder mystery show with some violent content doesn't mean that we are going to commit a crime in the future, but research has shown that crime rates have been more likely to occur due to exposure from violent content over long time periods.
