Mass Media & Pop Culture Survey

As a Media Studies class, we've been asked to create a minimum 5 question survey regarding the use of Mass Media and the impact it has, along with what is popular. We were asked to answer popular questions in regards to the types of media people are often exposed to, such as if they digest it all, and if they know about the influence of the media. Below are the top seven questions I chose to ask, and their results based on what I gathered from the 10 people I surveyed:

1. On average, how much time do you spend on all media per day? (Internet, TV, music, books, magazines, newspaper, etc.). Has this media proven to have any effects on your mental well-being?

Results:

1/10 reported they spend over 6 hours,  10/10 reported they spend under 6 hours

9/10 reported they've had a change in their behaviour or mental well being,  1/10 reported they've had no effects on their behaviour or mental well being

2. Approximately how many ads are you exposed to per day? Are these ads helpful?

Results:

9/10 reported they are exposed to 10 or more ads per day,  2/10 reported they are exposed to under 10 ads per day

3/10 reported them to be resourceful, 8/10 reported them to be irrelevant or annoying

3. Do you believe that the media's main goal is to target a specific audience? Do you think these audiences have retained the information they are exposed to?

Results:

10/10 believe that the media target specific audiences,  1/10 believe it doesn't target specific people

9/10 believe that these audiences have retained most information, 2/10 believe that these audiences haven't

4. On an average day, what form of Mass Media are you most exposed to, between Print Media, Broadcasting Media, Internet Media, or Outdoor Media?

Results:

1/10 reported they are most exposed to print media, 3/10 reported they're most exposed to broadcasting media, 7/10 reported they're most exposed to internet media, /10 reported they're most exposed to outdoor media

5. Between texting, social media, video messaging, or calling, which is your most popular use of communication?

Results:

2/10 social media, 7/10 texting, 1/10 none, 1/10 calling

6. Which form of Mass Media do you think is the most important or beneficial in regards to mental health, communication, business, or popular culture? (Newspaper, magazines, radio, TV, internet, music, etc.)

Results:

1/10 reported that newspaper is the most important, /10 reported that magazines are the most important, 1/10 reported that the radio is the most important, 2/10 reported that TV is the most important, 7/10 reported other forms

7. Do you think that mass media and pop culture have had a significant influence on teens and children over the years?

Results:

11/10 yes, 0/10 no

8. Without Mass Media how would our world be different? How would your everyday life be effected?

Results

Out of the 10 people surveyed, many concluded that kids would become bored, people would feel more content, people wouldn't fall into the trap of comparison as easily, communication wouldn't be transported as efficiently, people would be a lot healthier and happier, people wouldn't be as affected or bugged by major influencers and they wouldn't have the resources necessary to obtain important information, everyone would feel very disconnected and wouldn't know what's happening in the world, more time would be spent with friends and family and people would become happier but there's also many forms of encouragement from it, our world would be quieter and a lot lonelier, people wouldn't know as much about the world as we do now, and people wouldn't be spending as much time calling or texting but instead talking in person.

Conclusion

The survey I conducted included 8 questions including 11 people interviewed out of 10. Some of the results I found surprising while others I didn't find too surprising. I found it interesting that about 90% of the people I surveyed reported they've had a change in their mental well-being based on the amount of media that they expose themselves to per day, but many of them stated that they had spent under 6 hours using the media per day. I also found it interesting how ads have become such a huge part of our culture and that so many people are exposed to more than 10 ads per day; many of these ads which they didn't find helpful, only an unnecessary annoyance. What I didn't find surprising and what most people agreed on, is that ads are directed toward specific audiences, and that many of these audiences have become enticed from the information they are exposed to. What also wasn't surprising is that many people reported that they are most exposed to internet media instead of other forms of mass media, since our world has become so reliant on the internet. The fact that people mainly use texting as their go-to use of communication wasn't too surprising either because texting has become way more popular over the years since phoning isn't the only available resource other than face-to-face communication anymore. Towards the end of my survey 11 out of 10 people said that they believed teens have been influenced by the media, and on the final question, I received many different opinions in regards to how our world would be effected without Mass Media.
